Children's Furniture

As scientific understanding of how to keep children safe and healthy rapidly advances, staying informed and compliant with evolving standards can be a challenge. UL is a leading provider of rigorous, independent furniture testing, including performance and durability, flammability and chemical content testing of children’s furniture.

UL is registered with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) as an accredited laboratory for the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) third-party testing; and our worldwide laboratories perform testing to international, federal and state regulatory standards. UL has accredited laboratories in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. We hold Notified Body status under the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and the EU Low Voltage Directive.

Consumers, of course, want the very best for the children in their lives. UL GREENGUARD Certificationhelps manufacturers clearly communicate the health-based features of their products. Indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and the primary sources of this pollution are furnishings and building materials, which can release hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Breathing these pollutants is linked to a variety of health problems, including allergies, asthma, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders and some forms of cancer. Children are especially at risk for the adverse health effects of poor indoor air quality, and GREENGUARD Certification is a tool that manufacturers can use to communicate their commitment to indoor air quality by producing low-emitting products.

UL can also help furniture manufacturers and retailers affected by California Proposition 65 regulations, which require almost every business operating within the state to warn buyers of the presence of any of nearly 900 chemical substances contained in or emitted by the products that they sell.
