UL Offers Comprehensive Solutions to Help Ensure Safety and Sustainability of Broad Range of Juvenile Products

In 2019, there were 58 recalls of children’s products, impacting 13.7 million units, according to a report released by Kids in Danger. Thirty-eight deaths prior to recall were associated with children’s products in 2019. Dedicated to helping create a safer world, UL is pleased to announce the expansion in its solutions and services for comprehensive safety, sustainability and performance assessment of juvenile products.

UL’s state-of-the-art laboratory in Holland, Michigan, is newly equipped with specialized testing equipment to accommodate a range of juvenile furnishings, including cribs, high chairs, changing tables and more. With specialists in juvenile products and related regulations, UL offers manufacturers of juvenile products access to comprehensive testing, assessment, certification and advisory services to help ensure the products they sell meet or exceed rigorous health and safety standards, and help protect the environment. Some of the most common testing and assessments conducted include safety testing for potential hazards such as tip-over, with the UL Product Stability Verified program, pinch and entrapment risks, fire and flammability testing, and UL GREENGUARD Certification for low-emitting products.

“UL is committed to helping manufacturers bring safer, healthier products for children to market. Equipped with staff and facilities dedicated to juvenile products, our Holland, Michigan, laboratory is a single resource offering manufacturers convenience and cost effectiveness when conducting comprehensive health, safety and sustainability testing,” said Alberto Uggetti, vice president and general manager of UL’s environment and sustainability division.

Given the importance of children’s health and safety, juvenile products, which encompass a broad range of products such as carriers, furnishings, bathing, changing, feeding, seating and transportation equipment, are subject to federal oversight and regulations worldwide. Manufacturers of these products who fail to deliver performance and safety run the risk of recalls, lawsuits, fines or, worse, loss of trust.
